Entryway Closet Makeover

Tom and I are drop zone kind of people (not the thrilling ride as Canada's Wonderland, although we do like that too!). We need one place to throw the keys, cell phones, wallets, coats and boots, or else things get lost (sorry - they do still get lost - if anyone has seen a pair of grey leather mountain hiking boots around their house - they are Tom's - how does one lose a pair of boots???)

When we moved into this house, the front coat closet was scary. Forest green vinyl wallpaper and a shelf that covered half a window. Also - who puts a nice stained glass window inside of a closet? I knew this setup was not going to work for our everyday routine. If we were going to use the front door as our main entrance, we needed somewhere to quickly throw a coat and ditch the keys. So here is my solution to the front closet, inspired by this entryway closet makeover at The House of Smiths.

We ended up covering the walls in bead board, but that was after I decided we should strip the two layers of wallpaper off....oops. We also had to scrap off the forest green paint from all the trim and baseboards as it was flaking and chipping and we could not just paint over it. We removed the closet door and I also made a bench seat with a custom box cushion (using a piped bench cushion tutorial by Pretty Handy Girl).

The entryway actually has two components - the closet area shown above and the official key/wallet drop zone bowl in the living room. We needed a consistent spot to keep the cell phone charger, and there was no outlet in the front closet, so we opted to put the key "bowl" in the living room.

  1. The closet looks and functions great right now, but I am surprised by the use of 'we' when discussing stripping the wall paper. I remember it being a lot more 'me'!
