June Garden Update

Friday, June 14, 2013

It's high time we had a garden update around here! We moved all the seedlings outside around the middle of May. Unfortunately, we had a really late frost near the end of May and we lost a couple of our tomato plants because we forgot to cover them at night.  Oops...rookie fail. So we purchased a couple of heirloom tomato plants from The Tomato Patch guy at the Covent Garden Farmer's Market here in London. They are all doing really well now!

We are using the Square Foot Garden planter boxes we built for our balcony last summer. They fit nicely on the edge of our patio area, which is the only spot that gets enough sun through the day.

From left to right in the picture above, we have planted: carrots, pole beans, zucchini, bush beans, onions, chives, basil and mint. The pole beans were eaten by something so we had to replant a few. But the bush beans had really exploded in the last week. The onions were planted from small onion bulbs that we purchased at the Stratford Garden Festival.

We also have another planter full of kale, swiss chard, spinach and beets. The spinach is almost ready for harvest!

Finally, the real show stopper of this garden is the potatoes. These things are insane. We just planted some mini potatoes that we purchased from our local farmer at the market. Let the potatoes develop some "eyes" and then stick them in the ground. Three weeks later we have this!

I'll let you know when we get our first harvest! But things are looking great! How is your garden doing?
