Bathroom Storage

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

We have one bathroom in this house (see our floor plan here) and it's small, so storage is a problem. We needed somewhere to put our toothbrushes, store towels, and hide all the other ugly bathroom necessity things. There are some decent cupboards above the door and along the wall, but I easily filled those with hair products and other girly things. There are also some small shelves behind the mirror to store medication and smaller items.

Pinterest was a great source for bathroom storage ideas. Here are some of the things I loved:

And here is my copycat take on that inspiration. I bought a couple of baskets from Pier 1 Imports and screwed them directly to the wall, and voila - we have some towel storage. Super easy to grab a clean towel without having to yell to Tom to get me one from the basement.

Finding the baskets was somewhat easy, but trying to find a vintage wooden shelf with dividers like above - impossible. I did manage to find a vintage cream cheese box from Memory Lane Antiques, which works perfectly. I lined the bottom of the box with some take-out tray styrofoam (use what ya got!) and attached it to the wall with 3M Command Velcro Strips (available at Home Depot, Lowes, Rona etc). The command strips have a special adhesive that can be removed without destroying the wall or box.

I also added a small shelf above the toilet to hold my makeup bag and travel case. The wood for the shelf was $2 at my local Habitat for Humanity Restore. I just primed and painted it white and screwed it on the wall with some cheap shelf brackets from Home Depot! The shelf had to be small enough and high enough so that we wouldn't hit our head every time we use the toilet.

The one final accessory that I added was a $2 wire shower caddy from the dollar store. I physically bent the top so that it would sit properly on the clawfoot tub shower plumbing. No more reaching around the shower curtain to get the soap and soaking the floor.

Right now, everything in the bathroom is painted the same creamy yellow colour. I am working up the energy to tackle painting the trim white and the walls and fake tile board something blue-gray. Ultimately, I would love to gut and renovate the entire bathroom, but that may not be in the cards for quite a while, so paint will have to do.

I hope this gives you some inspiration for bathroom storage ideas in your home!

P.S. The small wall quilt will be up in another post soon.
